World Lake Day: Protect Lakes Before They Vanish

Lakes have long stood as silent guardians of life on Earth, cradling the greater share of the planet’s liquid freshwater, nurturing intricate webs of biodiversity, and moderating the extremes of climate that increasingly define our age. On August 27 the world observes World Lake Day, an occasion formally designated by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2024 and first marked globally in 2025. The date recalls the opening of the inaugural World Lake Conference held in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, in 1984, and it now serves as an annual summons to recognise these water bodies not merely as scenic features but as essential life-support systems whose health is inseparable from human well-being.
Across continents lakes store drinking water for communities, irrigate fields, sustain fisheries, absorb floodwaters, recharge aquifers, and offer spaces of quiet beauty that nourish culture and tourism. They buffer drought and excess rainfall, sequester carbon in their sediments, and host countless species of plants, birds, fish, and microorganisms that together maintain ecological balance. Yet these same systems face mounting pressures. Untreated sewage, agricultural runoff laden with nutrients, industrial effluents, plastic waste, and invasive plants choke many lakes into eutrophic decline. Climate change intensifies evaporation, alters rainfall patterns, and raises temperatures, while rapid urban expansion and unregulated land-use change steadily shrink water surfaces and convert lakebeds into settlements or farmland. The cumulative result is a quiet crisis unfolding in plain sight: lakes that once defined landscapes are shrinking, degrading, or vanishing altogether.
Nowhere is this reality more urgent than in the fragile Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir. Official assessments, including findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General, reveal that of the 697 natural lakes recorded decades ago, 315 have disappeared and another 203 have markedly contracted, erasing thousands of hectares of water spread. Iconic water bodies such as Dal and Wular, long celebrated for their beauty and ecological functions, continue to struggle under siltation, nutrient overload, encroachment, and inadequate sewage management. Conservation efforts have remained confined largely to a handful of prominent lakes, leaving the vast majority without structured plans, dedicated funding, or clear institutional responsibility. The absence of a comprehensive legal framework and a centralised authority has allowed responsibilities to remain diffused, monitoring weak, and corrective action intermittent. The consequences ripple outward: diminished groundwater recharge, heightened flood risk in the valleys, loss of habitat for migratory birds and endemic aquatic life, and growing strain on livelihoods that depend on these waters.
The story is not unique to one region. Across India and the wider world, similar patterns of neglect and overuse threaten freshwater security at a time when demand continues to rise. Lakes cannot be restored by isolated gestures or seasonal campaigns. They require sustained scientific monitoring, integrated catchment management, effective treatment of wastewater, control of nutrient inflows, restoration of wetlands that once buffered them, and genuine community participation in stewardship. Traditional knowledge of local communities, combined with modern tools of remote sensing and ecological science, can guide practical interventions that respect both ecological limits and human needs. Governments must move beyond fragmented schemes to enact clear laws, allocate adequate resources, and enforce accountability so that protection becomes a continuous duty rather than an occasional response.
Equally vital is a change in public consciousness. World Lake Day invites citizens, educators, policymakers, and young people to look again at the water bodies nearest to them and recognise their quiet contributions. Simple acts of reducing pollution, supporting local clean-up and plantation efforts, and insisting on transparent governance can accumulate into meaningful change. In a time of accelerating environmental stress, the health of lakes stands as a measurable indicator of whether societies are prepared to live within the planet’s limits. Protecting them is not an act of nostalgia but a practical investment in water security, climate resilience, biodiversity, and the quality of life for generations yet to come. On this observance the call is clear: lakes have given freely for centuries; the responsibility now rests with us to ensure they continue to do so.
